Robot Wars would have us believe that a robot is a remote controlled mechanical killer device. So what actually is a robot?
There are many different kinds of robots but they can be split into the following categories, one thing the all have in common though is that they are "autonomous" they do not have remote controls. Click on the pictures below.

Here are some definitions of what a robot is, as you can see there is no standarised agreed upon definition. The definition can vary according to the type of application. Some definitions seem to exclude certain accepts of what we might consider robotic others seem to be overly inclusive and could be anything.
"A reprogrammable, multifunctional manipulator designed to move material, parts, tools, or specialized devices through various programmed motions for the performance of a variety of tasks" (Robot Institute of America, 1979)
"the intelligent connection of perception to action" (Brady 1985).
"An intelligent robot is a machine able to extract information from its environment and use knowledge about its world to move safely in a meaningful and purposive manner". (Ronald C. Arkin 2000)
